About Going to Colorado. How can I prepare for the drastic change in altitude

Going to Colorado. How can I prepare for the drastic change in altitude?
I'm going to Colorado Springs (6,000+ ft. above sea level) in 2 weeks for an intense 4 day camp at the Air Force Academy. I, however, live in the Bay Area, where the highest altitude is only 400 ft. I work out fairly frequently, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to prepare physically, besides run my butt off.

1 :
drink a bunch of water so you wont get altitude sickness maybe try some breathing exercises since the air is thinner
2 :
Just keep working out like normal and drink plenty of water when you get there. You'll be fine, if you are working out while you are there you will notice the difference but it won't be all that bad.

Try calling Meeker Music -Phone 719-471-8940 or Graner Music - 719.574.2001 They each have a list of teachers you can call to see who teaches Thompson and who would be willing to trade work. Many of the teachers use the practice studios at the stores but they don't actually work for the store so they are free to work out their own financial arrangements. Thompson is a pretty popular method in the Springs so you should have no problem.

Try Modified Evolution. They are located off Academy Blvd. umm...tell them Rae sent you..you can look them up on Myspace..or Google them. http://modifiedevolution.com/ Not sure if they do Black Light...but you can call and ask. Mr. Chris does outstanding work. Do not go to Shrap Metal Tattoo..they sell drugs..and illegal firearms. If you aren't comfortable with M.E....then another shop I would say is Glory Badges...but personally...I recommend M.E.

About Scientific community in Colorado: Do they teach Evolution

Scientific community in Colorado: Do they teach Evolution?
I know near Colorado Springs they are REALLY conservative church goers and do not accept the scientific facts of this age and try to get science out of school. I was wondering, what is the general acceptance of scientific individuals in Colorado? Being an Evolutionary scientist, will I be treated as a threat or an asset to the scientific community in Colorado and will there be much resistance against my work from church going conservatives? I want to move to a place where my work won't be belittled and having tons of conservative protesters yelling on the side of the streets is just an eye-sore.

My experience touring through Colorado a few years ago as an observant Canadian was that there is a decent mix of people. For every arrogant Christian there is an ear open to new ideas. The problem with everything between Chicago and California is that the craziest ones shout the loudest, and it doesn't take many in any particular town to try and hijack the system and drown out the voices of the middle majority. You don't see reasonable people screaming: "Let's take to the streets and demand that everyone be reasonable!!!" It's usually the far outliers. Colorado Springs seemed like a middle of the road suburb type place. Unfortunately, the longer you stay, the more truth about the people will come out. I did not stay long enough to experience anything ugly, but have seen both, very artsy leftist kids, and hardcore right wing nuclear missile factory employees.
2 :
I think you'll find that the vast vast majority of members of the scientific community and Coloradans in general are very enlightened. Just do what the rest of us do when we encounter members of the religious wrong - ignore them.
3 :
It's basically only near Colo Springs. Everywhere else has normal, rational people. It's a red and blue state. Because of all of the natural wildlife, there are a lot of biologists in colorado. This isn't the south.

About Colorado Springs, CO

Colorado Springs, CO?
I read online that Colorado Springs is pretty conservative but I also saw that they have a lot of tattoo shops and even a tattoo school there. Would someone who has a lot of tattoos and gauged ears have trouble finding entry level work? Also what are some nice suburbs in that area to live in? Does the whole city have a military mindset because of all the bases located there? Thanks for any insight you can give me!

The Springs is cool. Like any where in the country, some people may not like ink and gauged ears, but most people don't care.
3 :
Boulder is more tolerant of weird behavior. Colorado Springs is conservative. Summit and Eagle Counties are cold enough that your tatoos will probably not be visible under your fleeces. Tatoos are common in service industries around ski resorts.

But I do not want to break the law and I have no education outside of high school, and neither have I any special work skills save customer service. How do I make the money I need within this time frame without breaking the law? I am attractive and I have thought of modeling, although I have absolutely zero experience. What is the secret and don't say telemarketing. Are there any rich men and women out there willing to sponsor a bright young twenty-one year old american boy? Does anyone know any roads least travled that I might venture upon? My english is without typical american dialect and I can even blend in England. Are there any job opportunities in the UK? I am open to almost anything, including bio-medical research. Perhaps I could participate in various pharmaceutical tests or something? Any ideas?

From their website it appears that their veterinary assisting program consists of their basic intro courses that comprise a portion of your first year in any veterinary technology program. This isn't uncommon though most colleges don't tell you that you have to take the "veterinary assisting program" though you are taking the same courses initially in your veterinary technoloy degree program. These are basic courses which are then built on as you continue your veterinary technology degree work. I

If you are considered PT with an employer but work FT hours 38+ a week, do they have to make you FT at all?

That is highly specific to the company themselves. Just as an example, UPS has a policy that says 90 days and a person has to be offered a permanent position. They will work a person 89 days, lay them off for one and start them over again. Check with your HR people and find out how many weeks of over 38 hours is considered before offering full time status. Best of luck and I hope this is useful.

You could try looking at sites on http://www.theknot.com.

my advice ( I've lived in Colorado my whole life) and I wouldn't go to Colorado Springs to go to the Mounatins. It is too far away and it doesn't offer a lot as in way of recreation. Estes Park is the best place to get the feel of a mountain town , at not the mountain town price. The famous Stanley Hotel isn't that expensive and it is beautiful. The Rocky Mountain National Park is AMAZING! You can see all the wildlife in the park ( Bison, elk, deer, beavers birds etc..) try here http://www.estes-park.com/

That would be up on the North side of the Springs. The south side is the bad spot here. There shooting and break-ins all the time down there. Denver is a bad place as well. Like I said before I have lived here all my life and I never feel safe up there. Oh yeah, there military here as well. There is a lot to them to choose from. Ha ha! Anyway, If you are really interested in moving here? E-mail me at hottyraider1972@HTML.com. Or you can find me on myspace. It's the same E-mail to find me there and I will help you find that great, affordable, and safe place for you to live. I hope that I was some help to you? You never know? Maybe, you might meet you a nice soldier man out of the deal. Oh yeah, there are jobs out here if you have the right experience and the right education. THAT is the biggest hang up on the jobs here that you have to have a diploma and/or G.E.D. To be able to have a good job and the money to survive on out here. absolutely. The academy is just like a regular installation in that there is a military checkpoint before you can get on base. You gotta show your ID to get on. Additionally, they perform normal security/police duties just like on a regular installation. fyi, its the 10th Security Forces SQ

About Moving to Colorado...Suggestions

Moving to Colorado...Suggestions?
Both my husband and myself have been given the opportunity to move to Colorado with our jobs from Texas. My husband's work would be in Colorado Springs and I would just need to be close to an airport for traveling. We have been looking at Castle Rock, Palmer Lake, and Monument. Education for our kids is HUGE for us. And a nice grocery store "in town" is a must which we don't have now. Got an opinion of any of these towns or maybe another suggestion?
Denver - 10 Answers

all i know is make sure you visit the hotsprings!

My family and I are also moving to Colorado! Congratulations, it's a great place. I used to live in a town called Parker. It's about a half hour away from Castle Rock (our church was actually there). It's a cool town and it had great restaurants :) Parker is a fairly large town, but we lived a few miles out of it in a neighborhood called The Timbers at the Pinery, and we will be moving back to that same neighborhood. It's on the side closest to Castle Rock. It's all houses plus there's an elementary, middle, and high school there. Grocery stores were only about 10-15 minutes away. We thought it was perfect there. I wish you and your family the best of luck in the near future! Colorado is a great place.
3 :
The Colorado Springs airport is medium sized, and it is located on the east side of town. Driving from Castle Rock to Colorado Springs in winter is gruesome. DH drove from South Metro to Colorado Springs for a year and said 'no more!'. Monument has a lot of new housing but it gets more snow than any other area around Colorado Springs. Trying to get over Monument Hill in a blizzard is something I never want to do again in this life time. I don't know much about Palmer Lake, but the area is beautiful. I thought it was mostly a tourist area but they may have built some housing and infrastructure there recently. Same problem with blizzards in winter. Talk to the locals and see how the commute would be. Here is a good Website for finding out about the schools http://reportcard.cde.state.co.us/reportcard/CommandHandler.jsp
4 :
You will LOVE Colorado. It would be best to live SOUTH of Monument because in the winter, Monument Hill ( the highest altitude spot between Denver and Colorado Springs) can be impassable. It would be muchsi for you husband, if you live in Monument or south of there. The areas near the Air force Academy, north of Co. Spgs. are gorgeous, but expensive. Areas just South of Co. Spgs...some are not as nice, others are gorgeous, and less expensive than north of town. Anywhere around Co. Spgs. is great.
5 :
you should consider checking out Lafayette its a small town that has kind of a suburban feel to it but also still has the small-town feeling as well its a pretty easygoing laid-back town, about 30-40 minutes from downtown denver and maybe 20 minutes to boulder theres lots of places to buy food- theres an albertsons, king soopers, and wal-mart as well as a farmers market in the summer and a few Mexican grocery store [large mexican population] as far as education- how old are your kids? theres like 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, plus a charter school and even a kind of "internet school" [idk much about it] and also not far from boulder where C.U. is. Not to mention there are other schools in surrounding cities theres also a creek thats in kind of a foresty-area where people go jogging and biking and its pretty peaceful....and theres a little lake too.... and you have your nice neighborhoods and your "ghetto" neighborhoods here, and everything inbetween just like any other city SO if you wanna move to lafayette i say go for it. if not, thats okay too. living costs are not too bad here btw. http://www.cityoflafayette.com/
6 :
I grew up in the North Metro Area, so everything south is a bit hazy... but if you NEED to be near an airport, and don't want to drive all the way to DIA every time (about an hour or more's drive from any of the places you mentioned) then you'll want to stay on the Colorado Springs side to use their airport for convenience. Castle Rock seems like a nice, older town, though, and Monument is a little more ... hmm... old school / ritzy from my own experience.
7 :
Colorado Springs is a very nice place to move to. District 20 is one of the best ones in Colorado and your kids would really like it as well as you. There are many grocery stores ie. Wal-Mart, Albertsons, Whole Foods. Castle Rock is a nice town. I'm not very sure on its education but it has anything else you might want. Congratulations!!
8 :
I would not look any further north than Castle Rock, only because of the commute from there isn't too bad (at least in good weather) and the need for you to be close to an airport. Denver's airport will still be about an hour away. Schools (Douglas County) is one of the best in the state. They have a new movie theater, Wal Mart, Outback and grocery stores! If connecting flights arent a big deal for you then consider Colorado Springs. I know nothing about the schools there, but I am sure there are some good ones. Monument is south of Castle Rock, but doesnt provide a wide range of housing like Castle Rock does. Good Luck!
9 :
Education is huge? Don't move to Colorado! We are, like 48th in the nation for Public Education, and in the Springs...you're going to find a lot of private schools where the emphasis is on indoctrinating foolish Baptist Christians, not on educating the children. (Not that ALL Baptists or Christians are foolish...just what they are raising there.)
10 :
South of Colorado Springs is Fountain, Security, and Pueblo. There is an airport in Colorado Springs. Fountain and Security have pretty good schools, and are close enough to Springs for commuting. If I worked in Springs, I would avoid having to commute from the north. Winter is hell on the roads that way. Lots of snow and road closures. 35 miles south of Springs is Pueblo. Not sure if you want to go that far. You can email me if you have questions. From my profile on Answers.

The Broadmoor is one of the best hotels in the country, top ten 5 star hotel so that could be a plus and its in a much larger city Colorado Springs, than Vail or Aspen so your chances of finding other work might be better. Marriot should also be considered since it is located in the middle of the city and around other jobs. You can compare the towns here to help ya out more! Good luck!
